You’re determined to make this the best job interview ever.
You’ve researched the company, updated your resume, and went over answers to the most popular interview questions.
You know how your past experiences relate with the new opportunity, every example of triumphs and struggles, and even what you’re going to wear.
This is how most people approach an interview. And, unfortunately, they’ve only looked at this as a one way street.
They forgot that it is also their chance to interview the company.
The best job interview involves asking questions as well as answering them.
But what questions should you ask?
Think about the reasons that you are looking for a new opportunity. Is there anything about your current position that you wish you knew before working there?
If you focus on why you’re leaving the last position, you will have a better understanding of what to ask the company.
Do you know how their training program is set up and what their expectations of you are as a new employee?
Do they value employee input?
Is there any substance to the company culture or is it all show? (This one is a difficult one to prove, because you have to take the word of the interviewer. However, if you ask to be given a tour of the company, you will be able to get a feel for the environment.)
These questions are just a few examples that will change with every person. However, every candidate should discover this crucial point: Get clarity around what the next steps will be.
After the interview there are only two outcomes; either a “No” or “Proceed,” with clear next steps.
(Proceeding does not have to mean hired, but it doesn’t mean you’re finished.)
Try to get a date of when to expect a call with one of those two responses… and let them know that saying “No” is ok!
Because it frees you to search for something else.
